The density of seagrass declined in Kalpeni from 2018 to 2019. Kadmat did not see any change in seagrass densities while there was an increase in the island of Agatti. Halophila, a fast-growing species accounts for this increase in density in Agatti rather than an increase in Thalassia and Cymodocea species.
Single observer transect surveys in the lagoons of the three islands did not indicate the presence of a high density of green turtles in Agatti and Kadmat. There were no green turtles observed in Kadmat during surveys in 2019. Kalpeni saw a decrease in the number of green turtles encountered from 2018 (n=48) to 2019 (n=11). This coincides with a decline in seagrass densities in Kalpeni from 2018 to 2019.
Seagrasses, mainly Thalassia and Cymodocea, were found in eastern side of the islands of Agatti and Kadmat. Turtle distributions also shifted to the eastern side, corroborated by fisher accounts. Fisher surveys also indicated that green turtles increased in density closer to or during the monsoons.
